About the festival

About Onam

Ten days of Chingam

Onam falls in Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar, when the rains have passed and the fields carry the new harvest. It runs for ten days, from Atham to Thiruvonam, and is celebrated by Malayalis of every faith and background. It is Kerala's largest festival and its most inclusive one.

The homecoming of Maveli

Onam remembers Mahabali, the king under whose rule Kerala is said to have known no falsehood, no want and no inequality. Granted one wish before he departed, he asked to return once a year to see his people. The pookalam at the doorstep, the new mundu and the sadhya on the leaf are all part of that welcome.

From Atham, a ring of flower petals is laid in the front yard of every home and grows wider each day until Thiruvonam. Children gather thumba, chethi and mukkutti in the morning while older hands set the pattern. Families in Perth keep the same custom at home and at the hall.

Sadhya, then thiruvathira

Onasadhya is served on a banana leaf, with rice in the centre, more than twenty accompaniments around it and payasam at the end. Everyone sits down to eat together. Afterwards the leaf is folded, the nilavilakku is lit, and the women form a circle for thiruvathira while the Onappattu is sung.

കാണം വിറ്റും ഓണം ഉണ്ണണം is an old Malayalam saying, meaning that Onam must be celebrated whatever it takes.
